The Cardiff Model Engineering Society was founded in 1948. The Society moved to its present site in Heath Park, Cardiff, CF14 4EN, in 1987. A new clubhouse was built at the time but a new clubhouse has been built in 2010 and opened by Dr Pete Waterman. As before, this contains toilets, catering facilities, a well equipped workshop and a “00” room currently housing the layout “Warsash”, on permanent display.”
Two independent passenger-carrying railway lines have been built, each approximately 1000 feet in circumference. The raised track accommodates 3.5” and 5” gauge locomotives; the ground level track accommodates 5” and 7.25” locomotives. Live steam, battery electric and internal combustion engines run on both lines. Each track has it’s own station, and are fully signalled from the signal box. Several sidings, a turntable, traverser systems and steaming bays equipped with both compressed air and electric power for blowers are available.
A 500 feet 18” gauge electric tramway complete with overhead power supply has been built, together with one-third scale models of a “Toastrack” tram carrying six passengers and a bogie tram carrying fourteen passengers. These trams were built in our own workshop. An external Gauge One and 16mm narrow gauge garden railway is under construction and in operation during the summer months.
These facilities are open to the public on selected days during the summer months, also a Santa-Special Day in early December. More information is available on the website “cardiffmes.com” A future development, which has already received planning consent, is a 2000 feet extension to the ground level railway track through woodland.

Although the predominant interest is railways, the Society promotes and encourages all forms of engineering in miniature. Membership details are available on the website “cardiffmes.com”
